Next Stop: Unknown
–
It’s rush hour on the red line.
The carts fill with hopelessness
dressed in slacks and loosened ties.
Tired eyes
that barely make contact.
Shoulder to shoulder,
but somehow alone.
They all know their next stop,
but their destination is unknown.
All searching for a place
that feels more like home.
And to the left, there’s a woman in scrubs-
she rests her head on her book bag,
one shift away from coming undone,
yet she still has kids to cook for
and errands to run.
A man loses his balance
as the train gently sways,
but he hasn’t felt stable in years anyways…
and he’s afraid
this is how he’ll spend
the rest of his days.
And in the background,
they listen to the train’s gentle hum,
watching the world pass by
like dreams
that will never become.
And in the shared silence,
they wonder…
if they’ll ever live a life
they don’t want to run from.
